EDUCATION
The work is implemented through a range of actions and through providing support to local organisations and groups. The education and youth work elements of the programme focus on key issues: Families & children; Literacy & Language Development; Early School Leaving and support to local projects.
Our work focuses on bringing together state and community interest groups. The aim is to enhance the level of investment in services that support the education needs of children and young people in the local area.
Families and Children • Working with local schools in the provision of parenting programmes • Establishing an area based parent forum • Provision of information sessions and workshops for parents • Interagency information sharing on best practice in supporting parents
Literacy & Language Development Activities include: • Literacy comprehension projects in conjunction with primary schools • Provision of teacher In-service Summer course on Speech, Language & Communication • Plans to introduce home based family literacy initiative • Language development training for early years workers • Researching models of best practice of assessing individual literacy in children
Literacy and oral language development for children has been a topic of discussion within local primary and secondary schools, as well as the early year services, for the past number of years.
In response to this the Partnership has been working with schools, early years’ services and other education providers to find alternative ways of supporting speech and language development of children.
A number of literacy and oral language development projects have been initiated and supported by the Partnership. These include a teacher network to share experiences of best practice and the introduction of new pilot projects; training for early years workers in oral language development and speech and language issues; teacher in-service training on oral language and literacy development; and junior infant language development programme.
Links have also been established with the adult education providers, HSE speech and language therapy services, as well as the National College of Ireland to pilot further projects.
Early School Leaving • An interagency project which aims to help young people aged 16 and over who have left school • The provision of support to the Yeah Project, for early school leavers
Support to Local Projects • The provision of support to Bluebell Youth Project; Londubh project; Rialto Learning Community; Canal Communities Intercultural Centre • Other services are supported as required
